Spirituality is the science of evolution from gross to subtle dimensions

Youngsters came out with a mixed response to the question of the difference between spiritual and material, posed by Sankalp Gaud for krrisha.com this week. In fact, some rightly inferred that there isn’t any difference as such but got confused when they suggested ‘a balance between the two—when they are one, how can you balance them? If you try to balance them then you presume that they are two! Ha-ha-ha

Let’s get deeper

The difference between spiritual and material life is manmade. In fact, Krishna doesn’t differentiate between the two. They aren’t two. They are one. Whatever principles apply to the material life also apply to the spiritual life, according to Krishna and hence differentiating the two is an age-old stupidity. We must stop it now.
I just give you an example. The man sitting in a cave and the man in the world both may appear to be apparently engaged in different dimensions of life—you will call the man in the cave spiritualist and the man in the world materialist. But, get deeper. They are principally facing the same set of situations. What a so-called worldly man faces in the world—fear, anxiety, memory and ego—is also faced by the man in the cave. Buddha had to face his fears in the form of demons and ghosts attacking him so did Ravan and Ram. Ram faced the fear and anxiety of losing his wife. Ravan had to face the fears of losing his power to Ram. Krishna’s discourse addresses life as an evolving reality. It talks about the principles which help one overcome the common negatives of life. Fear of losing spiritual wealth is the same as the fear of losing material wealth. Isn’t it? Greed for spiritual life is as potent as the greed in material life. Is there any difference? No. The difference is only in intent, which is the basic guide and direction for Intelligent Energy to flow. But, the effects of fear, greed and anxiety are equally distractive and energy sapping in both the artificially created segments of life. Interestingly, both are taken as opposite to each other.

What is spirituality
It is a science of evolution of an amoeba into a Buddha, an ant into a giant, an individual into a universal personality. How can one attain this if one divides life into two segments? Discourse Eight of the Bhagwad Gita explains what Adhyatma is. अक्षरं ब्रह्म परमं स्वभावअध्यात्मं उच्यते। Supreme and imperishable is Intelligent Energy. Its very identifying feature is called Adhyatma. How can you know something? Only by knowing its identifying features. Therefore, adhyatma is the science which helps you know Intelligent Energy and lead you to Its dimensions. What is the basic function of Intelligent Energy? भूतभावोद्भवकरो विसर्गकर्मसंज्ञित  This Intelligent Energy Itself creates the physical energy in the course of its expansion ( विसर्ग:). What is the direction? Towards the objects to be—planets, stars, your bodies, animal bodies etc. Therefore, this Energy Itself has become all these material forms in the course of its progression. That is wonderful. Even the material is just a formation of Intelligent Energy. Should you differentiate between spiritual and material then? No. It is stupid to do so. But, we need to understand that materialised energy has impermanence. The shapes and sizes may change and dissolve, but the energy therein doesn’t change. Therefore, all that is material essentially has all the qualities of Intelligent Energy. To know this and evolve with it is called the science of spirituality.

What is first.

Spiritual or material. None. Knowledge about imperishable reality is important. Krishna gives a systematic approach to all this in Discourse Three. He says Intelligent Energy is the highest in your body too. Then comes intellect. Intellect is higher than your mind. Your mind is higher than your sensory system. Your sensory system is higher than your body organs. Know this hierarchy and you will know how one energy has become gross subtle and the intermediary. Therefore, if you know that IE is the highest reality and then is your intellect, you will begin to practise spirituality in the right manner. It doesn’t matter whether you worship God or don’t. When you know how energy has become your body and your intellect, you will yourself follow the hierarchy and develop a natural sense of priorities in your life. That is what Krishna teaches throughout His discourse. Knowing Intelligent Energy and seeing it from Intellect to the gross cellular structures inside and outside is spirituality—the science of being and becoming.

Don’t ignore body

Body is material. All right. But, don’t ignore it. Through this body alone, you can know how Intelligent Energy is operative in every aspect of your life. Money is material. But don’t ignore it. Keep money and body fit with the knowledge that  you have gathered it from Nature and it will go back to Nature. The same way you breathe in and breathe out. This knowledge alone will give you the right sense of priority in your life. It doesn’t matter whether you are working in a factory, or a field or at home or a mutt or in a cave, you will have to face all the situations which help you evolve to the Intelligent Energy level or become Its best conductor. Once you have known this fact, your whole life will re-organise itself.   All your actions then will become expressions of Intelligent Energy. You will be engaged in a productive life. छिन्नद्वैधासर्वभूतहितेरता You will be like the persons who resolve and dissolve the dualities of life and engage themselves in everybody’s welfare. Because, they know the right priority of the body mind system and outside. They have no segments as inside and outside life then.

Spirituality is a connection or feelings for God. It involves feelings and beliefs of religious nature rather than the physical aspects of life. In material world, we are connected through friendships, parental affection and conjugal relationships. These relationships cease along with passage of time due to various circumstances including death.

On the contrary in spiritual world one can have a relationship with God as a friend, parent or lover. And these are relationships that never end because neither God nor soul ever dies.

So, spiritual world and spiritual priority should always be put on top.

Inference: Spiritual world should always be a priority. The relationship established with God is for eternity whilst that in material world might fade away.

Spirituality is knowledge of true Self, which in Hinduism is referred to as “Atma”or life driving force. Spirituality is the knowledge that drives one to Absolute.

In my view there is no difference in both worlds. Spirit and matter co-exist. Without spirituality, all material is lifeless and without matter the spirit can’t express eg. Without soul, the body is lifeless and without a body the soul cant express. So both have their own importance. An overdose of any of the two is not good. For a sanyasi, spirituality is of utmost importance and for a householder his worldly duties are a priority. For a common man balance between the two is important. Although the differences are man made, the awareness that everything is created for a reason will give solace and joyous path towards life.

Inference: There is no difference in both the worlds that is spirit and matter co-exist. An overdose of any is not good.

Spirituality is one’s thoughts and beliefs through which one connects to Supreme authority, God.

Material world is all about what we see that can be beauty of a person, house and luxury whereas spiritual world is about thoughts and inner peace.

Spiritual world should be kept first.

Inference: Spiritual world should be kept first. While material world connects us to the surface of a peron , spiritual world connects to our thoughts and inner peace.

Spirituality is the inner connection of God and soul.

Material world is artificial whereas spirituality introduces one to reality.

Spirituality should be given the upper hand over the material world as it is the path to peace.

Inference: Spirituality should be given an upper hand because material world is artificial while spiritual introduces us to the reality.

Spirituality is the sense of connection with soul and energy that adds meaning to life. Material world is the outer world whereas the spiritual world is the inner world.

Generally, people live in the material world whereas spiritual world has to be consciously chosen. Material world is full of desires while spiritual world is full of happiness, peace and satisfaction.

Spiritual world should be given priority.

Inference: Spiritual dimension should be given priority since material world is just outside world while spiritual is inside.

Spirituality connects the essence of one’s body to eternity. It is the best way to attain serenity.

Material world can only cause comfort for a jiff. And anything that causes momentary peace can never last forever.

Spiritual world is eternal. It may earn bliss to connect with the source of your existence. I believe spiritual world should be given priority.

Inference: Spiritual world is eternal while material is temporary that is why spiritual world should be given priority.

Spirituality is like gardening your own self (your soul+body+energies). When you cultivate and nurture your energies, body and soul, a feeling/sense of maturity blossoms in you. You experience a feeling which is greater than anything you have experienced before. This is Spirituality.

Everything that lies within our sensual sphere i.e. things that can be felt /experienced by our senses is part of materialistic world. Any experience which is beyond our sensual sphere, experience enriched knowledge and bliss lies under spiritual domain. In generalized way, material and spiritual worlds are different in the same way as “Happiness” and “Bliss”.

For a balanced life, material and spiritual both worlds should be present for a person but in the right proportion. This might also depend on the age group. E.g. A child may be more inclined towards materialistic pleasures. He/she should be getting that with slight sense of spiritual knowledge. High dose of spiritualism may not be appropriate for a child. On the other hand, if elder people give more importance to spirituality, it will act as a boon for the society. Spiritual experiences combined with material world’s experiences, can bring out the best of every human being.

Inference: Material and spiritual worlds are different in the same way as “Happiness” and “Bliss”. Experiences of both the worlds can bring out the best in a human being.

Spirituality is basically connecting with one’s own spirit and the Divine. Spirituality answers questions like who are we, where are we heading, who made us, what’s the purpose of life, what comes after death.

Spirituality can be achieved without a religion. Religion is just a part of spirituality.

Spiritual world is different from material world because in material world we tend to focus on those things which we don’t have, we try to achieve more and then again demand more the vicious cycle continues. But in spiritual world we tend to focus on what we are and what we have.

Spiritual world should be put first.

Inference: Spiritual world should be put first. Religion is just a part of spirituality though spirituality is beyond that.

Spirituality is basically how you connect with yourself. Spiritual world is how you know yourself. Material world is how you perceive the world around

Both spiritual and material world are important as we live in a society.

However, spiritual world should be put higher of the two.

Inference: Material world is how you perceive the world around. Spiritual world should be put higher of the two.

Spirituality is a feeling. We cant see it, just experience. But it gives us energy whenever we lose hopes and a re stuck up without solutions of our problems.

Material world involves body, mind and senses. The spiritual world revolves around the Self.

As it is important to be in the world for experiences, so material world would be my preference.

Inference: Spirituality is a feeling. We cant see it, just experience. Material world would be my preference as it is important to be in a world of experiences.

Spirituality is something that makes us believe that the Supreme power is above all and it works out everything as per His decision.

Everyone is after material world. It is full of attractions. But spirituality is where everyone can find shelter.

I believe however materialistic a person’s world may be but it should start with an inclination towards spirituality.

Inference: A person should be spiritually inclined because the spiritual is where all ca find shelter and solace.

Spirituality is when one has confidence to live life with power to face each and every hurdle, when one is being true to oneself and where one is peaceful within.

In spiriutlaity, purity of the soul is must whereas that is not the prerequisite in material world.

According to me, both are necessary as per the changes in nature as well as the world.

Inference: Spirituality is strength. Purity is a prerequisite for material and spiritual worlds therefore both are necessary.

Kausha Patel

Spirituality is the central strength of the universe. Humans may be spiritual or non spiritual but in both cases spirituality is there. Spirituality is power beyond the human mind.

Spiritual world has the answer to all the problems of the material world but the converse is not true.

People do take refuge to spirituality unless it is necessary but for me it is always the first priority.

Inference: Spirituality is central to the universe. Spiritual world has answer to all problems. It is priority for me.

Spirituality is something that can be felt and it puts our minds to ease. It is a self realisation of what we are and what we can do.

Material world is selfish and more towards the practicals side.. Spiritual world isnt selfish. Material world is a depriciation of human soul as it sees only what we don’t have wherea spirituality appreciates what we have.

Material world is good as far as our basic needs are concerned like food, clothing and shelter. On the other side, spirituality satisfies our needs like satisfaction, self realisation and self control etc.

Spirituality is more important as without inner peace you won’t be able to give your 100% to even material world.

Inference: Spiritual is more important since it gives us inner peace and strength to handle the outside.

Dipali Kiratsata

Dharma is that which enables a person to perform his duties with complete sincerity and dedication, selflessly & perform each action with the intent of benefit of the society at large.

Any path or act through which one gets ultimate peace and bliss can be the path of Spirituality.

The difference in the spiritual and material world is in nothing but the mindset of the people as we see difference in both. In reality, if one follows the material world in the true sense, he shall realize that it is the same as spirituality.

Inference: The difference in the spiritual and material world is in nothing but the mindset of the people as we see difference in both.

Compiled by Sankalp Gaud

I have an inner part within me which nourishes and is nourished by the meaningful works that take place with context to my workplace, work force and work nature.

Here the “meaningful work” refers to the attitude which I have for my work. My confidence increases by working hard and keeping faith in God. Whichever work is being done by this ideology, where there is hardwork and confidence gets stable due to faith of God is Spirituality.

Materialistic people have a professional goal in their brains and their minds craves to achieve those goals. The methodology of Karma which includes both hard works as well as faith in God is many times not followed by them. The desire for the worldly goals so deep that God is remembered only during tough times. The approach to God is a selfish one.

Spiritual people are those who also have a goal but in the midst of everything their mind and hear is set on the Creator and the communication with the Supreme. It is from this connection that they get all the energy to push for the worldly duties with the same zeal and passion. God is at the core of their activities.

Spirituality is the improvised and advanced version of materialism. All the flaws and faults of materialism are cemented by the power of spirituality. So spirituality should always be placed on the top most priority.
