Kunti

You are just nothing without Kunti

She is the basis of the entire Mahabharata. Kunti, who was the daughter of Shurasena and sister of Vasudeva. Vasudeva was father of Krishna. Interestingly, her original name was Pritha (पृथा). Shurasena gave the daughter to his childless cousin Kuntibhoj where she would serve guests with all diligence and sincerity. She was so sincere that even quick-to-curse-and-hard-to-please Maharishi Durvasa developed a soft corner for her. He foresaw  an unavoidable situation in her life and gave her a magical spell as a remedy. He told her that the spell would bring any deity of her choice to her to make a child. Out of curiosity, she called the sun and bore Karna whom she discarded. Later, she was married to Pandu. Pandu married another woman Madri. But he was cursed death by a Rishi the moment he tried to be intimate with his wives. This is the moment Kunti shared the Durvasa's spell with Madri and they both had the five Pandavas. Yudhisthira, Arjuna and Bheem were from Kunti and Nakul and Sahdeva from Madri. Madri and Pandu died of the curse soon thereafter.

Real import: But, this is history. Kunti comes from the Sanskrit word कुन्त, which means the iron triangle of a spear. You throw the spear up and the shear weight of the iron triangle makes it go downwards along the line of gravitation. Her original name is Pritha. The word comes from the the root word पृथ् from which comes the word पृथ्वी-- the earth. However, पृथ् technically represents the action of drawing in and creating. Therefore, पृथा means the power to draw in and create. This is exactly what is meant by the inverted triangle in the Indian mythology. But, how she gets this power? It is the boon of serving the sage Durvasa ( which also means difficult to live with). What is difficult to live with? It is the fire. That is why Prithvi got separated from the Sun. The sun has fire and fire is difficult to live with. However, Prithvi keeps the fire in the womb, which gives her the power to draw in anything and create many things. We can say that this power is Pritha assigned by the fire to her. Without Pritha, Prithvi will be rendered infertile and lose its gravitational force. Because, it is Pritha who as a power draws all the effulgent beings to the earth. The sun's rays help the earth create and procreate . The moon rays nourish the vegetation and the living beings and so on and so forth. Pritha attracts the centre of the solar system and begets Karna--the habit, the circulation around the sun (आवृत्ति) . Pritha attracts the centre of living beings --universal principle  and begets Yudhisthira. Pritha attracts at the centre of fire energy  and begets Bheem. Pritha attracts the centre of senses (Indra) and begets Arjuna.

Example:  What if rains don't fall on the earth? We will have a dry spell. Who draws the rains? Pritha. What happens when your system lacks Pritha? Females will struggle with conception, delivery and nourishment of the child. Males will not have the fertile fluid in the absence of पृ  (healthy nourishment). They too will have a weak constitution. Where do we have nourishment from ?  It is through the power of Pritha, which gives us healthy vegetables, animals and birds as food.

Takeaway: We should respect the earth and her power of providing us shelter, food and nourishment. So, always remember Pritha with reverence.
