Abhimanyu

He is your disciplined anger, so keep him

He was a sixteen-year-old son of Arjuna and Subhadra. Subhadra was a sister of Krishna. Abhimanyu had learnt martial arts primarily from Arjuna and Krishna. He had learnt in his mother’s womb the specialised skill of breaking into the strategic enemy army spiral (Chakravyuh) from his father. However, Subhadra slept while Arjuna narrated the final part and this deprived Abhimanyu of the technique to make a complete exit from the strategic spiral. The occasion came, when Dronacharya made the Chakravyuh and Abhimanyu entred into it like a ball of fire. He decimated Kaurava warriors and defeated Dronacharya, Kripacharya, Dusshasan, Karna and almost trapped Duryodhan to death. The Kaurava warriors would often flee seeing his expertise, motivation and  It is said his warring techniques amazed even Dronacharya who praised him right in the battlefield. He told Duryodhan that Abhimanyu alone was enough to decimate the entire Kaurava army but he wondered as to why he was not doing it. Finally,  his chariot was strategically broken by the experienced warriors. But, Abhimanyu fought the enemies picking up weapons of the slain warriors. He got exhausted and killed by the son of Dusshasan.

Real import: But, this is history. The word Abhimanyu is made of two Sanskrit words Abhi + Manyuh. Abhi means well-directed and Manyuh  means anger. Therefore, Abhimanyu represents a disciplined, well-directed and corrective anger within us. Frustrated anger is bad but well-directed one is a great power to win the battle against habit, memory, lust and other Kaurava warriors.  Abhimanyu is sixteen when he enters the Chakravyuha  and decimates the Pandava enemies. It is a bit technical aspect, but let me simplify it for you. Moon’s son Varcha was reborn as Abhimanyu. Varcha means glow of the moon which has 16 energy cycles. Moon is also known as Soma in Sanskrit, which means nourishing energy. Now how does it all connect? It means when you discipline your anger and give it a higher direction, you begin to express these 16 powers or energies. Which are : 1 Amrita,

2.Manada, 3.Poosha, 4.Tusthi, 5.Pusthi, 6.Rati, 7.Dhruti, 8.Sasichini, 9.Chandrika, 10.Kanta, 11.Jyostna, 12.Shree, 13.Preeti, 14.Angada, 15.Poorna and 16.Poornamruta.

But, this is only possible when you begin the heroic discipline while you have the young hormonal spurt. This doesn’t mean you can’t do it now. Even Abhimanyu tells his charioteer when the latter asks him to rethink before entering the Chakravyuha designed by Dronacharya that the entire Kaurava army is no match for a part of his sixteen kalas, which he had received from his maternal uncle Krishna and father Arjuna. Abhimanyu is the son of Krishna’s sister Subhadra and Arjuna. Subhadra means right discipline and Arjuna means chitta. This means our young heroic attitude grows out of right discipline, nurtured by well-trained chitta and the infinite dimension Krishna.

What does Chakravuyha signify? Dronacharya makes it to ensure victory of Duryodhan. Chakravuyha represents the memory’s hypnotic spiral, which deludes people from taking the right decision and direction. The spiral represents the galactic end or creation and unfolding of the clear space. The yogic science shows it as the level of Vishuddhi chakra (the six petalled energy centre) in the throat. It is said that a yogi becomes immortal at this level and acquires 16 powers after crossing the memory and genetic dimensions. It is said that after reaching this level there is no fall. The disciplined anger energy loses its head here and merges with the infinite—now there is no more to achieve. This is symbolically represented in the killing of Abhimanyu—the wheel of his chariot is broken (representing no recurrence), he falls on the ground (he surrenders to the infinite) and his head is smashed by the son of Dusshasan (the disciplined anger has served its purpose).

Example: If somebody calls you names, you get angry and hit back in the tit-for-tat spirit. What happens? You risk losing your relation and exposing you weakness to the challengers. Think of Abhimanyu then and divert that energy for a higher goal. Prove your point with that energy.

Takeaway : Try to discipline your anger. Disciplined anger is a great motive power to achieve material

and spiritual goals. When challenges trouble you, you get angry and fritter away your motive force. What happens then? You feel down and weak. Therefore, keep the heroic spirit alive for the right purpose.

Next: Who is Kripacharya?
