Why a person struggles and other excels in the same situation?

Question by: Atul Kumar, Assistant Manager, Nagpur

Atul, it is a fact as variety is the plan of nature. Nature has given everything to everybody but in varying quantities and qualities. Everybody has two sets of eyes and ears, but everybody may not have the same capacities to see, hear and perceive. Why is this so? Because we all, maybe physically similar in terms of organs of action and perception, differ greatly in terms of inner assets—perception and experience.

Due to the difference in our perceptional and experiential capacities, our performance and results are different too. But, there is another reason which directly affects our performance and results. That is called daiv by Krishna in the Gita. Please refer to Chapter 18, shlok 14. Herein, Krishna gives five major reason of how our level of performance and levels of success differ. First is our situation, which involves our body, home, family, associations, adversaries etc. Now everybody has different sensitivities towards them. They may impact the performance and results more intensely in some cases and less in others. But, the situation is one of the factors in performance and result variance. The doer is the second cause—the doer means the individual makeup of a person. You may react in a situation in one way and your colleague in a different way because of the constitutional makeup. You may not gift your way into your boss’s heart but others can. So such differences of approach lead to different performance and results by way of comfort level. The third is the instruments you have. Your senses may not be better equipped than others or vice a versa. Or, you may have a better screw driver than others to tighten the nuts. The fourth is the difference in motive forces and motivational levels. If you are better motivated, even less skilled that you may be but your motivational level will improve your work. The fifth is the most powerful and independent cause —daiv, or divine interference. I may not agree to it, but it is one of the strangest extra-territorial forces which not only influences my performance but also the results. It is something you are born with but haven’t got a chance to analyse it and manipulate it. You can call it a matrix of nano-causes, which are embedded deep in your memory. So much so that you cannot really recall, alter or influence their course. These nano-causes are greatly responsible for the difference in success levels.

But, what is the way out? Krishna says bring Me into play and I will relieve you of the influence of the nano-causes. Read shlok 66 of chapter 18. Krishna says, “Completely reject all the ways which you think are perfect (as they are not) and make Me your protector. I will relieve you of all the nano causes (sarpapebhyo),  don’t worry!” --VS
