Blind determination is commitment, an open-eyed commitment is determination.

What is greater?—determination or commitment. The youngsters Pranav Shukla interviewed for krrisha.com this week inferred 50-50. Many of them even said commitment is greater. Ok. But, let’s get deeper.

What is commitment ?
It is the resolution of the mind to do something for somebody or some cause as a kartavayam. That is there is no option but to do it, is commitment. To simplify it further, we can say ‘ I have given my word to somebody and hence I cannot do anything but to do it ‘, is commitment. Let’s understand it with the example of Bheeshma Pitamah, who had committed to the throne and not the person. Earlier , when the woman he loved was married to his father , he committed to remain a celibate all his life. These are two examples which tell us the commitment we often make — we mindlessly take a determined stand which has negative repercussions. In the case of Bheeshma, a very wise and powerful person that he was, his commitment made him a slave to the throne and he did not even bother that the person sitting on it was repeatedly doing injustice to the Pandavas. He knew it was wrong , but his commitment had literally robbed him of his freedom to take the right decisions. Instead of taking a commitment of celibacy , had he told his father about his sentiments for the woman, he would have saved the Bharat from having Duryodhan as the king and the Mahabharat. Therefore, commitment is blind. It makes you a slave to the thing committed. You work for it even if it is wrong. Resolution of the mind, without consultation with the intellect is, called commitment. We must say commitment is the job of the mind.

What is determination?

Determination is the job of the intellect. It comes only after seeing things in the bright light. Whereas, commitment is seeing things in the coloured light. In Sanskrit, determination is called Dhriti. It is commitment to the person on the throne till he/she is acting right. The moment, the righteousness is gone, the commitment to the person in the chair is gone too. This is called determination. Determination is always for the right. Because it happens only after a severe discrimination or seeing things in bright light. That is why Krishna tells in the Gita, बुद्धाै शरणं अन्‌विच्छ—Take shelter of the intellect. Determination is the job of the intellect. It is better than commitment, because it has eyes, whereas commitment is blind determination, which enslaves you to the thing committed.
Therefore, commitment  with the eyes is called determination.
In a majority of cases, youngsters out of emotional commitment, stay blind to the person they commit to and then suffer whole their life. They act like slaves to that person and suffer like Bheeshma lying on a bed of arrows. Remember! What Krishna says in chapter 3. He puts intellect higher than the mind and hence He asks us to use the intellect, see things as they are in its light and then with strong determination strive for it. Isn’t it?

Final word by Krishna

He says in Chapter 2, Shloka 37, तस्मादुत्तिष्ठ काैन्तेय युद्धाय कृतनिश्चय:।। Therefore, O Arjuna! Get up! And work on after having decided with determination. Have you ever seen Krishna making commitments ? He always decided things on merit and carried them out with determination. In the last Chapter of Bhagwad Gita, He says मोक्षयिष्यामि मा शुच Do not worry I will relieve you of your burdens. This seems like a commitment. But it is not. He puts the condition in the first half of the shloka—Leave all you have adopted, come and seek My shelter. So Arjuna has  to complete two tasks before he is given the commitment. Isn’t it an open-eyed commitment —well that’s determination and not Bheeshma-like commitment.

Commitment is like a willingness or diligence to give your time and energy to something that you believe in. It's a promise or a decision to do something. Commitment is what transforms the promise into reality.

Determination is emotional. It's like focusing with the visualization of a mission accomplished. But simply determined people seems unwise. They get themselves all worked up and if they are idle, they start trying something else. Determination is momentary.

But commitment is constant. It is a decision that never looks back.

I think youngsters should be committed. Commitment suggests one is bound because he has made a pledge or a promise through a formal agreement or we can say legally.

But the thing that some youngsters lack is that they ignore the process to achieve their goals. So one should be committed to their goals with the fact that they should devote themselves towards achieving it.

Inference: Determination is emotional. But commitment is constant. Am person should be committed to their goals.

Commitment and determination have two different meanings.

Commitment is something that you give to others. In commitment you may or may not put your one hundred percent.

While determination is something that you promise yourself to achieve. You will certainly give everything whatever it takes to achieve something you’re determined about.

I’d say a balance of commitment and determination.

Commitment should be given to personal relationships and growth.

While one must be determined to achieve his goals in life.

Inference: Commitment is a promise to others while determination is a promise to self. A person should have both, commitment towards personal relations and determination to achieve ones goals.

Commitment is being dedicated to a cause. It is the quality of being responsible to accomplish a task or goal.

Yes there's a difference between being committed and determined. Commitment is generally related to the outcome whereas determination is an everyday. If we're committed to accomplish a task, we have to finish it before the deadline whereas if we're determined we are moving towards our goal day by day

A youngster should be determined. Even after giving a commitment, sometimes one cannot achieve the goal but if one is determined, he will reach his destination one day for sure.

Inference: Commitment is related to results while determination is everyday necessity. A youngster should be determined to reach his goals.

I think commitment is a relative word , like one can commit to anything be it work or a person , we are all commited to our parents but it is now deviated immensely from the original ideologies.

Youngesters nowdays only relate commitment with their love life .

Determination and commitment are  indeed interrelated , like if we take work , one needs to be determined and committed.

Same applies for the relationships , you need to be determined to be committed , everything fades away with time only compatibility lasts so you need to be determined to be committed. If taking the work scenario ( studies in case of  youngsters) a youngster should be determined and committed .

And about the relationship scene one should be determined to make it work.

Inference: A youngster should be determined to achieve his commitments.

Commitment is what you decide to do believing that it is the right thing to do. There is not much difference between determination and commitment, but the youngster should be both determined and committed because it’s important to know the right thing to do or the importance of that thing. As well as determination to do the work no matter how hard it is. It’s just like with responsibility comes authority. With determination comes commitment.

Inference: There is no such difference between commitment and determination. With determination comes commitment.

Commitment means to stay dedicated towards that single thing. Like Arjun could only see the eye of the fish. Commitment needs you to decide your priorities. You must be able to assess what would make it easier for you to fulfill the commitment that you have already made or are trying to make. Settling scores with your priorities is the most difficult thing though.

There is a difference between commitment and determination as it is between thought and action. Determination is that fuel that drives your engine and helps you abide by your commitment. Without determination you wouldn’t be able to focus. It brings a kind of seriousness to keep your spine erect while you so want to rest. Determination is essential to fulfill commitment. Thought is a waste without action and an action without thought is worse.

Youngsters should be both, determined to fulfill their commitments. If you are committed to lose your weight then you should be determined to give up unhealthy food.

Inference: Determination is essential to fulfill commitment. A youngster should be both.

Commitment is a sense of responsibility which one endows upon himself, it can be classified into two categories on the basis of its nature:-

1) Official

2)Personal

Whereas determination has a hairline difference with commitment.

It can rather be said that determination is a tool with which the value of commitment is achieved.

But needless to say both of the above values are important to build a strong character for a human. According to my observation determination and commitment co-exist that is they cannot exist alone, they need each other to exist.

Inference: Determination is a tool to achieve the committed object.

To me, commitment means sticking with it. It means not giving up even if it gets tough. It means doing that thing regardless of the reasons that tell you not to. Making a commitment is serious business and not something to be taken lightly. The truth is, people are way too quick to make

commitments and too quick to abandon them. When you make a promise, you’re not giving your word in erasable pencil, you’re inscribing your commitment in indelible ink. When you make a commitment, you are not only keeping your commitment for their benefit, but also you are keeping it for yourself. That’s because your honor and self-respect hang in the balance.

Determination is the willingness to do what it takes to succeed. It means focusing on your heart’s desires and not giving up on your goals when you are forced beyond your comfort zone or when inevitable setbacks or disappointments happen.

Commitment without motivation means you are determined to take the necessary steps to work towards your goal, but you’re doing so without any joy. You’ll do it because you feel you have to, because you need to, but not necessarily because you want to. Motivation without commitment means you have the desire and the joy, but do you have what it takes to continue when the road gets long and difficult? Without commitment, the first obstacle you run into might be your last.

Commitment is what will keep you moving when you have a dip in your motivation. Commitment to a goal means that the challenges you face along the way won’t cause you to veer off of your path – they are just temporary setbacks you have to deal with. Commitment to your team means that even when your performance is low, you still support your teammates and want to see your team succeed.

Inference: Determination not to give up when a person is thrown out of his comfort zone. Commitment works only with motivation and not otherwise.

Compiled by Pranav Shukla

Commitment is consciously assigning our mental and physical potentials and capacities to an object of our choice and work in accordance with it.

Determination is utilised for strengthening a commitment, therefore determination is a prerequisite for commitment.

A youngster should be determined. Determination is a fundamental quality that can and should be put in the activities but one should be extremely discerning and wise with making a commitment.

The Bhagwad Gita is a quintessential study for all and in particular for young minds. The text provides principle thread bare for all scenarios and the simplest way to start grasping The Gita is by starting Beejankuri: The Seed of Bhagwad Gita by Vivek Sharma Sir; the thread bare principle along with their universal application and utility are transparently enunciated in Beejankuri.
