Hold your breath!Yogis talk about nano-respiration

By Vivek Sharma

You cry like a weakling even though your body is an inexhaustible battery of energy with a recharging circuit! Isn’t it amazing? But, we  are like a person who has diamond buttons on his shirt yet he goes out begging for food on village streets!
Ha-ha-ha.
But, do we know what is our problem? We have only stuffed our brains with information which is making us hopping around like a monkey to save ourselves. Our flights are based on  no-food-no- energy, no-energy-no life mindset. We are also like a person who has fed himself with  a kilo of almonds and now he is having cramps and trips to bathroom but to no avail. Almonds are no good if you can’t digest them. The same way the information is no good if you can’t work it out into energy. That is the very foundation of yoga, as discussed in the Bhagwad Gita.
Krishna tells Arjuna in Discourse 15 that the body is already equipped with all the tools required to keep itself fighting fit for the purpose. He talks physiology right from the nervous system, energy system, the digestive system and sensory system in the discourse. But, we still won’t learn. We will continue to believe in skepticism which has been fed into us by physically evolved but mentally unevolved breeds of humans, who believed and still believe ‘what they cannot know is no knowledge!’

Body’s Energy Field

The yogis of the yore had researched out that every body has three major streams of energy which enable it to run various functions it is built for. The basic function of them all has been respiration—the lung activity and the related metabolic functions.  These energy rings string together various activities of the body right from the brain to the toe. Not only this, the yogis found out that these energies were only extensions of the cosmic energy. They vibrate in a particular direction in and around the body. It is as if these vibrating energies made two diagonal spheres like in a cross (X)  with a median sphere regulating both like rechargeable battery, to keep it charged till it served its purpose.
These spheres of energies are called Ida, Pingala and Sushumna in Sanskrit.  The Ida sphere is nourishing energy. It functions like the moon to the earth. It is focused in the left of the body (the north) and it controls the functions of the right side. The Pingala sphere is a revealer, a brightly dynamic wheel of energy. It kills toxic wastes and negativities and directly energises as the sun energises the earth and sets in motion various weather systems.  What the sun does to the earth, the Pingala sphere does to the body. The Sushumna is the median sphere which links with both the spheres. Both the spheres are balanced on it, they terminate into it or are sustained by it. It creates and destroys at the same time. Time doesn’t bind this energy as it is the Continuity of Intelligent Energy.

Krishna’s Take

Krishna says in Discourse 15  as to how the energy system operates in the cosmos and the body as well. He says the Sun energy, which reveals everything,  the moon energy, which nourishes all and the Pure Fiery Energy, which digests, dissolves and resolves everything and everybody, all that I am. I, as the moon energy nourish all the vegetation, nerves by adopting the liquid form (rasa). I digest all four kinds of food by igniting the fire through balancing of the inhalation and exhalation to the right measure. All these have great and finer details to which Krishna has explained the science of energy. Here he talks about two ways of gaining energy. First the cosmic way and the second the ordinary way. In the cosmic way you only recharge the body battery through nano-respiratory activities. However, those who depend upon food, digest it through the gross respiratory movement which somewhat triggers the nano-respiration and recharges the body battery. Ordinarily, the body battery is not fully  charged every time due to malfunctions in various organ-based energy transactions, which largely are based on how we think, eat, sleep and do things.

Yogis Say No Different

The Yogis of the yore even describe how the body battery has three connections—the positive, the negative and the neutral. We can understand them as Ida, Pingala and Sushumna. They even describe how these energy circles work.
A Yogic literature of India mentions

इडा वामे   विज्ञेया पिंगला दक्षिणे स्मृता।
इडा नाडी स्थितावामाततोव्यस्ता पिंगला।।

The Ida should be known in the left of the body and Pingala in the right side of it. The Ida vibration of energy controls the opposite to the left side of the body and the reverse side is commanded by the Pingala.

This means these two energy channels have left and right positions, but functionally they control, command and protect the opposite sides to each other. स्थिता means control, command and protect—to maintain.

इडायां तु स्थिश्चंद्रः पिंगलायां  भास्करम्।
सुषुम्ना शम्भुरूपेण शम्भुर्हंसस्वरूपतः।।

At the centre of Ida energy movement stays the moon and in the Pingala one, the centre is the sun. Sushumna is the Shambhu principle. Shambhu, whose principle form is , ham sa—dissolution and creation at the same time.

We will have to understand a few words here. शम्भुरूपेणशम्भु, literally means the energy, the fire, which extinguishes, tranquilises and burns down whatever exists for good, welfare and nourishment. Therefore, Sushumna energy vibration is a great digester, refiner, which converts everything that exists (negative or positive) into Intelligent Energy. The yogi explains it as शम्भुर्हंसस्वरूपतः. The Shambhu principle is हं-कार -कार. Here   is energising and हं is the sound of Intelligent Energy.  सृजनं करोतिहं-विलीनं करोति।  stands for expansion of हं, harmonising, collecting , tuning vibration, which integrates. The form of the Shambhu is हं-कार -कार—the two are inseparably One. That is Shambhu principle which is acting out both at the same time.
Ida and Pingala vibrations are only a functional circuit for the हंस activity. Ida is moon-centric, that is it is nourishing, energising, creating, spreading, expanding and nectar-like acting out the -कार. The Pingala energy vibration is sun-centric—it is a great revealer, with tremendously fiery energy, which resolves, dissolves and digests. These two energy vibrations make the body systems go on. Any malfunction in the two only affects the body system and the surroundings around it.

Recharge The Battery

The yogis say learning and working out the moon and sun vibrations through practice along can help one re-charge the body battery the right way without upsetting the harmonic vibrations of Intelligent Energy.
Actually, they here are detailing the nano-respiration and clearly mention that whatever you find at the gross level as respiration is actually the effect of the nano-respiration. The yogi focuses on that and controls the gross one gradually to his benefit.

प्रकटं प्राणसंचारं लक्षहेद्देहमध्यग:।
इडापिंगल सुषुम्नाभिर्नाडीभिस्तिसृभिबुधः।।

The flow of energy within the body appears to be through respiration. But, the wise must understand it happening through the triple channels —Ida, pingala and sushumna. In fact, they are carried out by these three channels of energy.

The respiratory system is directly linked to the distribution of energy throughout the body. But,  the yogi says, “the respiration is the visible effect of the main respiratory activity—intake, distribution and outpour—happening through the main energy channels—Ida, Sushumna and Pingala. The lung movement is the effect of that internal respiratory activity, which can be called nano-respiration happening at the energy level. Micro-respiration happens at the cellular level and lung respiration at the gross level. Nano respiration can also be called causal respiration, as the subtle energy transformation here results in cellular and lung respirations. Here the yogis proves that respiration is a subtler process than what we understand it to be. Once an individual gets hold of the nano-respiration, he may or may not require the lung activity to re-charge the body battery. He does it through nano-respiration, which directly involves Ida, Pingala and Sushumna energy spheres in and around the body.  This is sufficient to give you a glimpse of the science of yoga. No we are not talking about pranayama here. We are talking here about nano-respiration.
